Background:

Janus is the lone offspring of a vampiric human father, and an elven mother. Janus' maternal family, a clan of moon elves, didn't approve the union. So it was decided that they would elope, and flee south from the mountains to the outskirts of GearFar, in the hopes that there would be no retaliation. The two settled far from the eyes of society to raise their child, oblivious to the political unrest beginning to brew in the region.

When Janus was 4, government officials came knocking on every door of every known family in the area, conducting a census of the surrounding wilds. Little did the happy family know that they were about to be torn apart forever. Janus was kidnapped in the night, and shipped off to a concentration camp with the other "half-borns" and "un-humans." Tabaxi catfolk, half-orcs, dhampirs were targeted, among other peoples. Janus never heard from their parents again, and it can only be assumed that they were killed in the struggle. The young dhampir grew up in a hardened environment while political power changed hands again and again behind the scenes. A lot of the trapped population wondered why they weren't simply put to death. Many powerful figures exploited them over the years, others simply had them tortured. The only thing that was common was brutality.

Despite all of that, or perhaps because of that, Janus grew up with a kind but secretive and underhanded nature. When they were 70, and due to the staging of a small coup, they managed to escape their camp with a few colleagues and acquaintances they met in captivity. Free of their chains, they set out from GearFar to make something of themself and put their learned skills to the test. They had turned out to be particularly skilled in the art of speech and deception; and soon made a name for themself in a far-off guild. Unfortunately, for the first time in their life, Janus was surrounded completely by people of a similar ilk as they were, and they ended out with the shitty hand. A bad deal still stains the tongue of this talented thief, and they dislike speaking of it, but I'll tell you true: they were betrayed by the one they trusted most, their mentor. He made a deal with a rival guild, tipping them off with a location and time of their next heist. The rival guild alerted the target, who Janus had been honeytrapping for weeks. There it was, their two-faced schemes allegedly come back to haunt them.

So, with their name disgraced, their reputation in the dirt, the dhampir slunk back to GearFar with their proverbial tail between their legs and a chip on their shoulder to lick their wounds. Turning tricks just did not have the same appeal as it once did, so they retreated underground. When they returned, they had a newfound determination in their heart, and set their sights on GearFar itself.

It is yet unknown when or what made them decide to slip fully into the moniker of "Two-Face." Soul-searching, some may say. Meditation, others may argue. Only the dhampir knows, and they give a different answer every time.

After all, can you really trust a silver tongue?

Janus is the only part of the Tri-Soul (alongside Feste and Roiben) to retain all of their memories. It wasn't until after Boji was defeated that all three parts of the soul were in the same room together, and trust me, they did not get along with Roiben. Once Roiben was sent back to Faerun to correct his misdeeds, Janus was split from Feste and now enjoys their own body and soul.

Janus is originally from the elven city of Mirador in the province of Zephyrlyn. This is also where Boji is from.

At one point, Janus was in a promissory union with Lhosdir. They were put in the concentration camp by the lich Boji before the union could be confirmed and consummated. After escaping the concentration camp, they sought out Lhosdir once more and became both his betrothed and one of his paladins. In fact, in return, Lhosdir made them the governor of his patron city: GearFar. The two had been separated for a long time during Janus and Jeinko's imprisonment, and their physical relationship can no longer continue. They said their last goodbyes after Boji's defeat.

Janus is the adoptive parent of the homunculus that Boji created to serve as a copy of Salem (her intended conduit). Ruin, once also known as "Salem," has stepped into his own identity and is proud to call Janus "Da'." He had no idea of Janus' whereabouts during their imprisonment, and thought himself abandoned, but they are now gladly reunited.

Unfortunately, in choosing a mortal lover, Janus had to say their final goodbyes to Jeinko at the end of his life. They are still the governor of GearFar, and have erected a temple there to celebrate the faith of the Canopy, and to mourn the lives lost of Jeinko and his catfolk kin who were imprisoned and enslaved for centuries. The townspeople do not like to celebrate this, but Janus isn't going anywhere anytime soon.

Quotes:

(mockingly) "'Wha' language is tha'?' Am speakin' Common, yeh wee cunt."

(to Jeinko) "Aye, am little an' yeh're the queen of DragonShaw, wee bab."

(after being imprisoned for like, 100 years) "Aye, any yeh cunts got a plan?"

(to Jeinko) "I love ye, me fluffy little monk."

(immediately before killing Boji) "Le's fuckin' get it."

(to Roiben) "Tha's a neat little trick, yeh cunt." [...] "Am goan teh break yeh in half fer tha' one."

(to Lhosdir) "Wha' about me catboy?" [...] "Boyo's got a funny look in 'is eyes..."

(to Lhosdir) "Am goan love you until am dead, Brigh' Eyes. Mark me oan tha'." [...] "Yeh loyal servant. Promise. Bes' go, before yeh make me all misty."
